‘How do I develop my support networks?‘ is the fourth and final resource in our Enhancing Resilience series. Developed by Margo Brewer and Dawn Bennett, this resource is designed to help students recognise the importance of having a sense of connection, belonging and support during their studies. This week’s featured resource is a career story from Dr Demelza Ireland, a biomedical scientist and educator. Ireland focuses on internal drivers and how these can be combined to create an intrinsic definition of career success. Demelza’s career story is a great resource for students to understand the importance of being open to experiences and finding a ‘career niche’ that combines all their interests. This week’s employABILITY thinking feature helps students to Create a high achieving group and is the very first resource we have developed as an interactive form. Look out for more interactive resources for students in the coming weeks. The resource is great for students who need to form teams or undertake group assignments. The ability to build and sustain networks can make the difference between a good career and a great career. However, many people avoid networking or feel shy when meeting new people because they do not know what to say about themselves. The elevator pitch is a short statement that summarises what we do and how we might meet the needs of other people. This tool guides students through the process of developing an initial pitch. Use this week’s featured resource, Turning on the career light, to run a workshop with students or faculty. The workshop challenges participants to find the literal and metaphorical meanings in everyday objects and to relate these meanings to their experiences and future work.
