HERDSA presents Developing EmployABILITY National Roadshow

March 6, 2018 - April 24, 2018

Developing employABILITY as metacognition: Opportunities for learning, teaching and research

The development of employability is a shared concern for teachers, students and institutional leaders, but how can this development be accommodated within the constraints of limited time, expertise and resources?

The HERDSA workshops mark the end of a Senior National Fellowship with the former Office for Learning and Teaching. The Fellowship positioned employability development as the cognitive and social development of students as capable and informed individuals, professionals and social citizens. This thinking informed the development of a validated, socio-cognitive measure of employability with six, inter-related Literacies for Life (L4L), aligning employABILITY development with both the purpose of higher education and the future of work.

The HERDSA workshops will engage participants in a personalised self-assessment profile and the resources and strategies with which to embed employABILITY within existing programs and courses. The workshops will suit teachers, program leaders, curricular designers, senior managers and careers advisors. No prior expertise or experience is required. Participants will gain:

  • Access to the online self-assessment profile tool for students;
  • Resources, ready to embed into an LMS or unit outline;
  • Career stories to share with students; and
  • Examples of the SoTL and educational research that flow from students’ respones and engagement.
